Tom Chandler arrived at Sun Hill following the corruption scandal and clear-out of CID officers by CIB at the station. Sexy, well-educated, charismatic and politically astute - Chandler, 38, was what the Met was peddling as its new, firm but caring, acceptably liberal face - in the hope of clawing back some credibility and renewing the shine on its tarnished image.

Mannion chose Chandler because he thought he had the integrity, presence and personality to give Sun Hill a new, refreshed image. Politically, his gung-ho pursuit of high profile policies could create hostages to fortune, and personally his excited sense of his own power had an unfortunate side effect: his Clintonesque weakness around women.

The final days of Tom Chandler were fraught with a game of cat and mouse. After unrelenting digging by DCI Jack Meadows and DC Mickey Webb it became clear that Tom's dark past was catching up on him. A rape allegation from his Hendon days emerged and not even a marriage to DS Debbie McAllister could stop his downward spiral. Backed into a corner with CIB learning of the situation, the futility of his position meant the only way out was to take his own life.
