DI Alex Cullen played by Ged Simmons

33 year old Alex Cullen was rugged, steady, slightly taciturn, dry humoured. A hyper cool version of Deakin, perhaps, although his composure was more like that of DI Harry Haines, who served at Sun Hill several years ago. However, he arrived at Sun Hill with heavy baggage. Cullen was the only direct appointment Chandler made - and it soon became clear to Meadows, as well as to the team, that he was the Super's man in more ways than one; we often saw him as Chandler's unofficial hatchet man.

Cullen's persistence and commitment to the Job meant that he earned the respect of his CID officers - he always kept a tight reign on them, making sure they knew who was in charge. These attributes caught the attention of various visiting senior officers, but Chandler always seemed to overshadow any chance of change in Cullen's career direction.

In the end, after a power struggle between him and Chandler, Cullen applied for a transfer to MIT. Unwilling to let him go, Chandler tried to block the move, but Cullen's knowledge of various indiscretions in his past saw the transfer completed within days.
