35, and of Sri Lankan descent, Ramani De Costa came across as warm, engaging, extremely bright, and very good at her job. Her witty, sarcastic sense of humour sometimes got her into trouble with her colleagues, but she was incredibly sensitive with those she dealt with as part of her job.

With 15 years experience behind her, Ramani was widely tipped for great things. She passed her sergeant's exams with ease and certainly ruffled a few feathers in VPU with her far more informed approach to sex offences - she was a specially trained expert in the field. Her enthusiasm and knowledge were a breath of fresh air to the department. However, the reputation that didn't precede Ramani into Sun Hill was the contradictory mix of computer like brain and scatty persona. She was the sort of person who would pile up files on the floor because there was no room on her desk, and who breezed past in a whirl of Post-its. However she insisted that she could tell you where everything was, maintaining its organised chaos. Ramani was often running late (and running down corridors), but she was incredibly effective as a copper and had a real instinct which served her well and made up for her lack of organisation - most of the time…

Ramani arrived quite rightly confident of her own abilities and soon found herself running the show with some brilliant suggestions for the Unit. Some of her colleagues were initially jealous, but Ramani wasn't into putting anyone else down; she liked to be liked. She eventually left Sun Hill to join the Child Abuse Investigation Team.
