Yvonne Hemmingway was Sun Hill's 'larger than life' PC. She may have been big, but she was proud and had the self-confidence to match. Her passionate and gutsy approach to life spilled over into her police work, preferring to 'take the bull by the horns' rather than just sit back and wait and see. This sometimes backfired on her - but Yvonne was more than willing to suffer a few hard knocks if it meant getting a collar.
As a cop, Yvonne used her size to her advantage whether it was to intimidate or overpower a criminal. She had no shame about being 'big' and didn't let her size get in the way of a good time. Yvonne had a dry sense of humour - including a ready bank of cutting retorts to anyone who took the mick out of her. She could see the funny side of most situations and loved poking fun at others (it was her way of showing affection) but also didn't mind being the butt of a joke, as long as it wasn't malicious.
Having transferred from Barton Street, she already knew the area well. She was the kind of cop who got to know the local criminals/kids/community and used her knowledge of local people to help her solve cases. She shared a flat with a PC friend from Barton Street and was quite happy being single. Yvonne was a good time gal, she had a string of boyfriends and when she wasn't on duty, you'd find her down the pub having a laugh with her mates or showing up the blokes around the pool table.
Yvonne's natural authority and leadership skills led her to being frequently seconded as Acting Sergeant to Sun Hill's relief. She left the station when she was offered a full-time Sergeant's post by the DAC at another station working with young offenders.
