THE
Bill is a cracking show, but this latest incest storyline leaves
me cold.
I have no objection to soaps
tackling tough issues. But I find it repellent that PC Kent has a
sexual relationship with his mother, knowing he is her child.
It would have been different
if the two of them had begun a love affair with NO
idea they were mother and son.
It would STILL
have been a ratings winner, but we would have had sympathy for
them both. The added spin is unnecessary.
It should be a tragedy of
epic proportions. Instead, I fear it will reek of sordidness.
I am a huge fan of The Bill
— I actually appeared on the show as myself interviewing killer
cop Cathy Bradford.
Trudy Goodwin and Todd Carty
will give compelling performances, but I have a deep unease about
the way this important subject will be handled.

I
DON’T think this storyline is taking things too far.
The whole story is about how
evil one character can be.
It’s about how one
person’s life can be toyed with and twisted.
What makes it good drama is
the traditional soap twist — everyone knows what’s going on
except the one it’s happening to.
We see June Ackland blindly
fall in love, but left shattered when she discovers the truth.
It’s classic telly, to my
mind.
But it’s a long-term
story with lots of twists and turns and, ultimately, it’s a
story about June being manipulated. And the incest is part of
that.
A small number of cases like
this really have happened, but I think we’ve handled it well.
I thought the Brookie incest
story WAS titillating. You had all of these
steamy kissing shots when the actors were in bed, but there’s
nothing like this here. This is far more sinister.
