Dean was a people person: chatty, friendly and enthusiastic with a wicked sense of humour. He was also a deep thinker and had a tendency to over-analyse situations, a quality which women were drawn to and men often mocked. Open, honest and self-aware, Dean couldn't stand dishonesty and struggled with people who he felt were putting on an act.
Dean was very much 'one of the lads' and enjoyed nothing more than a good night down the pub. He'd spent years coming to terms with his disability but he was a fighter who had chosen to live life to the full. Fiercely independent, he learnt to do everything for himself and politely declined offers of assistance.
Dean was paralysed from the waist down following an accident at the age of 25 where he dived into a river having misjudged the depth. He had already applied to the Metropolitan police and was planning to start the course at Hendon following the holiday on which the tragedy occurred. Dean very quickly made a decision that this was not going to stop him doing all the activities he loves: going to the gym, playing sports and travelling as much as possible. He also decided that he was still going to join the Met. as a civilian. Dean lived alone in a specially adapted flat but had frequent visits from his doting older sisters. He left his job in CAD in February 2006.
