Lucy has been put through his paces while doing stunts on The Bill.
"Two out of the three have resulted in injuries," he confesses. "I buckled my knee in a fall between two crash mats and hurt myself on another occasion - but nothing too serious thankfully."
The Footballers' Wives veteran will be seen on the small screen next month as PC Will Fletcher, a law enforcer who refuses to do things by the book.
"He is a bit of a maverick cop," explains the actor. "But nothing beats nicking criminals, and if that means bending the rules slightly, then so be it."
Lucy became a household name six years ago playing Luke Morgan in Hollyoaks.
In 2002, he played Kyle Pascoe in Footballers' Wives and went on to star in last year's Ray Winstone drama, She's Gone.
Gary makes his debut at Sun Hill on December 14 and his character doesn't make a good impression on his new colleagues.
He arrives late for his first day at the station after being pulled over by fellow officers Honey Harman and Dan Casper for riding his motorbike while trying to read a map.
Fletcher will also incur the wrath of Gina Gold, but soon uses his charm to win her over.
