PC Roger Valentine is, on the surface, a lovable rogue with bountiful charm and energy - but scratch the surface and the water gets a little murkier. Always one to uphold law and order, he pulls no punches when on the job and is always keen to voice his opinions. He firmly believes the Met. has gone soft and too PC, and will tell anyone who cares to listen. Always tough but never unfair, that's his opinion anyway. Posted at Sun Hill after a five-year break from the force, he finds that his old fashioned principles don't sit well in a modern station, with his colleagues quick to brand him sexist, homophobic and racist. His thinly veiled homophobic comments can seem innocuous and can make some people laugh, but it purposefully sidelines others by constantly using the 'no offence, mate' line.

Still rattled from the fallout of a disastrous marriage, he's intent on throwing himself into his work and insists he has no time for romance - until some of his female workmates catch his eye. If there is a weakness in this man, it will be well hidden, but can surface where women are concerned. He left the force to marry the love of his life - it was all over one year later when she went off with someone else. Though he would never admit it to many, the woman he married totally broke his heart and the thought of another relationship would have him running for miles…but this is something he would only admit in the most intimate and vulnerable of moments. Now Roger's back to do what he loves best and he's throwing himself into it.

Since narrowly escaping death at a night club where scaffolding fell on him, Roger has been suffering from post-traumatic stress. While on duty, Roger has frozen a couple of times unable to act in his capacity as a police officer and serve the public. Now he’s very aware of his own mortality.
